reality is hard to understand. my classes this semester ... well, one in particular, deals a lot with the human interpretation of reality. there are so many facets of our presumed reality, structures that are really not so structured, with no foundation. language: what is that? if you are reading this post, are you going to take what i am saying the same way that i mean it as i am writing?

i know what you're thinking: how does this pertain to life? in fact... how many of my/our classes actually relate to life? this is why i love English~ it all does. reality is so subjective; to be honest, we all MUST be selfish in the simplest definition of selfishness. whether we like it or not, our reality, our worlds, revolve around ourselves. that is why we often have misconceptions in terms of friendships and relationships. when something occurs that has somehow affected us, it must have been intentionally done. what we must realize is, although friendships are often cherished, are usually cherished, this does not mean that the other person does not have a life of their own. this will definitely indirectly affect you/me. as a human, we inherently believe that those things related to us, affecting us, are purposefully put there. however, the entire world and its reality is a web, all realities interwoven, all interdependent. this is something we must realize in order to function in such a world.

i was told i should xanga this. to which i replied that i xanga altogether too much. but here i am! at 2:20 AM after returning from c street. xangaing.

so, we were discussing how people listen to music. this particular friend listens to the tune, just like nance does, while hottie listens for the words. for me, it's the song as a whole, not necessarily either part, but really how it relates to my life and also what memories it triggers.

i feel that this is a good insight into someone's personality.

if you listen to the words, language restricts you. we have been talking about this a lot in my critical literature/theory class. words, although technically defined in the dictionary, do not truly hold ONE meaning. each person has a slightly different definition due to experiences. it seems that, if your choice in music is based on the lyrics, you concentrate more on others and what they are trying to convey, molding their meaning into one for yourself

if you listen for the melody, for the tune and for the quality of the voice, it seems as if you their interpretation does not really matter; what matters is what emotions the melody and voice evoke for you, and an appreciation for the beauty of the music itself. the song, rather than belonging to the artist, now belongs to you because you enjoy the melody. you could very well put your own words to it and you would enjoy it just the same.

for people like me, who are ecclectic and really just connect music to events and other people, it reveals that we concentrate more on our relationships, where something as personal as music, i feel should more often be connected to your own individuality.

anyway. that's my piece. peace out.

how does one begin to describe pain? i can sit and picture it flowing from my heart, through my arms, out of my fingertips, and onto the page. however, what results is something restricted by language, every word with no universal definition, with a hidden meaning acquired from each person's experience. what can we do? i can paint it, the brush as my manipulator for my oils, the colors a representation of my hearts murky waters. then, again, it is restrained. how much can a painting speak? can it evoke those emotions in those who view the painting? can those carefully drawn eyes speak what words cannot? i can write songs, but i am limited in my skills with the guitar. i would wish to write music, not lyrics, but because my skills are limited, i cannot begin to play my deepest sorrows and regrets, a picture of the shattering of a soul. if i were to use words, where would i begin? it makes it that much more complicated; the perfect lyrics to match the perfect melody. my voice, how strongly can it portray this darkness? how wide a range of sadness, but i am limited to two octaves. when the heart is about to burst, where is the excess to go? i have always thought that we have more in our heart than we need, that the extras are what we share with others. but how? don't get me wrong, i love the arts, i love them because they will not fail me in their consistency. B flat will always sound the same, reds always as deep, and wordsworth always as sublime. however, sorrow and pain, it is best expressed through that saline flowing down the cheeks, eyebrows raised, eyes widened, face contorted, lips quivering. i must find another escape.

re·pres·sion   Audio pronunciation of "repression" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (r-prshn)

re·press   Audio pronunciation of "repress" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (r-prs)
v. re·pressed, re·press·ing, re·press·es
v. tr.
  1. To hold back by an act of volition: couldn't repress a smirk.
  2. To put down by force, usually before total control has been lost; quell: repress a rebellion.
  3. Psychology. To exclude (painful or disturbing memories, for example) automatically or unconsciously from the conscious mind.
  4. Biology. To block (transcription of a gene) by combination of a protein to an operator gene.

repression is also a problem among those in our age range. what do i mean by repression? i am not using it in the psychological sense, although that is also common. basically, to repress something means to hold it back. this repression is also a fruit of cynicism. it is a defense mechanism we use for fear of getting hurt, since some people are selfish and only look out for themselves.

on the surface, repression seems like the answer. why not protect yourself from getting hurt? are there not feelings that should not be shared? if you show someone how much you care, what if they throw away your feelings like insignificant pebbles?

all of these questions and similar ones have been created because of our society. humans did not begin this way; slowly, we meandered our way to this state. however, this can change. if we all slowly became more caring, more trustworthy, then there can be love and caring and disappointment, all freely shown. the result will be a more fulfilling life for all people; giving love and receiving it are equally fulfilling. why not?
